Currants and raspberries are harmless to health? The Federal Office for Consumer Protection gives the all-clear, Greenpeace continues to adhere to the fact that pesticide cocktails can be hazardous to health.
(29.07.2010) The environmental organization "Greenpeace" had warned against residues of pesticides in currants. Consuming the berries poses a health risk for the consumer. The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) in Braunschweig rejected the warning that there was supposedly no risk to consumers. "Currants and raspberries do not pose any health risks," said the Federal Office.

In a series of tests, the environmentalists examined 31 samples of currants and raspberries from German supermarkets. Numerous different pesticides were found. Greenpeace warned against eating the berries, and illegal pesticides were even found in some samples. But the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety rejected the warning, and none of the 31 samples exceeded the maximum level of pesticide residues. For the Federal Office it is clear that there are no health concerns. The reference to "pesticides without EU approval" is factually incorrect. All 21 chemical substances that were detectable in the berry samples are permitted in plant protection products in the EU. 18 substances were included in the EU-wide positive list; transition periods currently apply to the remaining three.

The Federal Office also called the statement that currants from Germany "contain illegal agricultural toxins dodin and difenoconazole" as questionable. The chemical substances are permitted in Germany. However, the active ingredients are not used in the cultivation of currants, but in other types of fruit had found these pesticides in currants and argue that the corresponding pesticides have now also been used in the berries. But the Federal Office assumes that the residues could have other reasons, because the detected concentrations were 0.03 and 0, respectively , 07 mg / kg is very low. So it is possible that the detected substances could come from neighboring orchards through "drift". Nevertheless, it is irrelevant whether the fruit grower may have violated the regulations because the residues of "Dodin" and “Difenoconazole” would be below the maximum permissible limit of 0.2 mg / kg and are "harmless to health".

Greenpeace sticks to the assessment that pesticide cocktails can be harmful to health. There are still no sustainable studies that conclusively assess the actual dangers of pesticide cocktails. According to the environmental organization, there is a legal loophole here. In addition, Greenpeace never claimed that the limit values ​​had been exceeded, but pointed out that the "sum of the active ingredients" triggers the potential danger.

The Hamburg food control department had already confirmed that there was a loophole in the legal regulations in the comment on the Greenpeace salad test last winter 2009. The food control department considered such a cumulative assessment to be permissible for samples on which several pesticides were found.

The current currant tests also found two illegal pesticides. "Dodin" and "Difenoconazole" are not approved for use in currants that are produced in Germany. Nevertheless, both pesticides were found on currants of German origin. The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety has confirmed that both active ingredients are not permitted for currants produced in Germany. Now the food control of the federal states is tracking the goods back to the producer and making further investigations. (sb, gr)
