Experts recommend simple protective measures against hay fever
The hay fever season is heading for its heyday. The birch pollen is already in the air and the grass pollen flight is imminent. Experts recommend allergy sufferers to protect themselves at least a little from hay fever attacks with a few simple measures.
Experts Professor Jörg Lindemann, ENT specialist and allergist at the ENT University Clinic in Ulm, and Dr. Regina Treudler from the dermatology clinic of the University of Leipzig in an interview with the "Apotheken Umschau". By taking fewer protective measures, allergy sufferers can reduce the symptoms of hay fever relatively efficiently - however, hay fever attacks cannot be completely avoided with these methods.
Regular nasal douches to relieve hayfever symptoms Regular nasal douches as a remedy for hay fever are slightly controversial among experts, but their use should be considered by everyone. Because according to Professor Jörg Lindemann, ENT specialist and allergist at the ENT University Clinic in Ulm, the symptoms of allergic rhinitis in hay fever patients have improved noticeably, "if they rinse their noses regularly with a salt water solution." Although the effectiveness of the nasal douches according to Dr. Regina Treudler seems questionable, because "there are no clinical studies on the effectiveness of hay fever", a trial is recommended in any case to hay fever patients. Professor Lindemann was convinced that rinsing the nose with a saline solution would remove the pollen deposited on the mucous membranes. Professor Harald Morr from the German Lung Foundation also recommended allergy sufferers to use nasal douches at the beginning of this year's hay fever season to alleviate the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. According to the experts, the nose should be cleaned once a day with a physiological saline solution (0.9 grams of sodium chloride per 100 grams of water). The concentration should not be exceeded if possible, since otherwise irritation of the inside of the nose can occur. As soon as the hay fever symptoms no longer subside, the nasal douches should also be suspended, because the intensive use of nasal irrigation can also have negative consequences for the nasal mucosa, warned Dr. Treudler.
Avoiding contact with allergy-causing pollen The general rule is: To prevent hay fever, contact with the allergy-causing pollen should be minimized as far as possible. Street clothing should not be taken into the bedroom, as the pollen attaches to it and can become a burden at night if the clothing is left in the bedroom, the experts explained. "Pollen also gets stuck to clothing, which can get into the bedroom and cause problems at night," emphasized Dr. Regina Treudler. According to the allergist, it is best to keep the street clothes in a separate room and to use different clothes when staying in the house. As soon as hay fever patients return home, they should change their clothes and put on their pollen-free wardrobe, the experts explained. It is also a good idea to wash your hair before going to bed. "We recommend washing your hair every day as a useful secondary prophylaxis, ie for allergy sufferers who should 'avoid' their allergen," emphasized Professor Lindemann. Because a lot of pollen settles in the hair and they are taken to bed if the hair is not rinsed out at least, according to the experts, evening hair washing is a must before going to bed.
Hay fever patients should only ventilate when there is a low pollen load. Ventilation of the home should also be well considered for hay fever patients. Under no circumstances should it be ventilated during the day in dry weather, since most of the pollen is usually in the air here. For hay fever sufferers, ventilation is best suited during or shortly after a rain shower because the pollen pollution in the air is then relatively low, the experts explained. In addition to the weather, the ideal time for ventilation is also heavily dependent on where you live, as "pollen (...) fly in the country at a different time of day than in the city," emphasized Professor Lindemann. For example, the pollen pollution in the countryside is particularly high in the early morning (four to six o'clock), whereas the urban pollen is mainly in the air between 6 p.m. and midnight. The best time to ventilate in the country is therefore between 7 p.m. and midnight, whereas in the city it is best to ventilate between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., explained the allergist. For the rest of the day, according to the expert, the windows should remain strictly closed - unless it was raining.
Pollen filter to protect against hay fever attacks Pollen filters can also help to prevent hay fever attacks, since "depending on the quality of the filter, it can catch pollen and other particles quite effectively," explained Dr. Treudler. For allergy sufferers who travel a lot by car, a filter is highly recommended. Professor Lindemann also sees pollen filters as a sensible protective measure, although according to the expert, modern cars with air conditioning are already equipped with such filters anyway. According to Professor Lindemann, it is "very important (...) to have the filters changed regularly so that the pollen filters can also have their effect, otherwise they will clog and do nothing more". According to allergists, pollen filters in vacuum cleaners can also provide a noticeable relief for hay fever patients.
Treatment of the causes of hay fever Treatment approaches that do not address the symptoms of hay fever but the causes of the allergic reaction have been developed by Dr. Regina Treudler and Professor Lindemann did not set out in conversation with the "Apotheken Umschau". But here too there are numerous methods that promise a significant improvement for those affected up to the complete avoidance of hay fever attacks. At the beginning of this year's hay fever season, the allergist and specialist for pulmonary and bronchial medicine, Dr. Wolfram Feussner explains that in hay fever patients who only react to individual allergens and still have good lung function, hyposensitization is a relatively promising treatment method. The hyposensitization takes a considerable amount of time for those affected, but it has "already helped a lot of patients," emphasized the specialist. In naturopathy, too, most of the measures are aimed at remedying the causes of hay fever rather than treating the symptoms. Here, for example, promising treatment successes have already been achieved with relaxation procedures, magnetic field / bioresonance procedures, autologous blood therapies, herbal therapies, self-suggestion, acupuncture and homeopathy.
