Baby boom causes midwife shortage in Saxony's capital

According to the nationwide midwifery association, there is a real shortage of midwives in Saxony. As a result, mothers and fathers currently have to look for a freelance midwife for a long time. On the one hand, the so-called baby boom in Dresden, Germany's capital of birth, means that the population and skilled workers grow, and on the other hand, more and more independent midwives have to give up their jobs because wages are out of proportion to the work done. It is not uncommon for pregnant women in Saxony to look for a midwife for weeks.

Massive increase in liability premiums
The massive increase in liability insurance premiums to around 3,500 euros per year means that the gross salary of freelance midwives shrinks to a gross wage of less than 7.50 euros. According to the Midwives Association, around 17 self-employed obstetricians have given up their jobs in Dresden. There are said to be around 10 percent fewer midwives in the whole of Saxony. Pregnant women have to worry about childcare, especially in the high-birth summer months. According to the Sächsische Zeitung, Dresden's delivery rooms could also experience bottlenecks in phases. The health insurance companies have announced that they will only consider higher premiums next year. Until then, many obstetricians have to work “at starvation wages and out of pure love for people”, as a spokeswoman for the association said. (sb)
