Good ophthalmologists are not easy to find

Five criteria for finding a good ophthalmologist

With around 700,000 operations per year in Germany, the replacement of a mostly age-related clouded eye lens - also known as “cataracts” - is the most common procedure on the human body. In general, eye operations have been increasing significantly for years. More and more people who wear glasses or contact lenses have their ametropia corrected by laser eye treatment or lens surgery in order to get rid of their often annoying visual aids. The number of providers is correspondingly large. Dr. Kaweh Schayan-Araghi, board member of the professional association of ophthalmologists and medical director of the Artemis Eye Clinic in Frankfurt, lists the most important criteria by which interested parties can identify a good ophthalmologist and surgeon.

If an operation is imminent, the search for an operating ophthalmologist who understands his craft usually begins. Here, the in-house ophthalmologist will be happy to give recommendations as to which operating ophthalmologist is considered in the region. In addition, experiences of former patients often help to put yourself in the right hands to correct ametropia or clouding of the lens. “Basically, the number of operations performed and the success rate indicate the quality and competence of the doctor. An experienced eye surgeon who performs about 250 procedures a year usually masters his craft, ”explains Dr. Schayan-Araghi. In addition, all technical devices should be state-of-the-art and, like the other equipment, should make a perfectly hygienic impression. Although it is often not easy for a layperson to assess these points, it is worth taking a critical look at the first visit and the famous "first impression" is also important here. A good ophthalmologist also spends a lot of time on comprehensive advice, aptitude tests and addresses the personal needs of the patient. He presents various procedures, explains the advantages and disadvantages and finds out in a detailed discussion which method is best suited to the individual case. “Mutifocal lenses to correct presbyopia may not be ideal for drivers and people who work a lot on the PC due to possible glare effects. However, they can be ideal for cooks who would always wear glasses or fitters who often work overhead, ”explains Dr. Another important point of reference for patients: You should place great value on being examined and advised by an ophthalmologist during the preliminary examination and not only on the day of the operation and not - as in some laser practices - only by an optician.

The so-called Lasik TÜV seal also offers maximum safety for laser eye surgery. Doctors and clinics that carry this symbol comply with established treatment and hygiene standards and are regularly tested in terms of quantity and quality of their operations. "Patients should pay a lot of attention to choosing the right ophthalmologist," concludes Dr. "After all, these operations involve an intervention on what is probably the most important sensory organ in humans."
