Our feet are exposed to high loads. To support them optimally, it is essential to wear good footwear. In addition, the shoes should be changed regularly to give the feet different stimuli and the shoes time to ventilate. The professional association for health service and welfare care (BGW) in Hamburg advises this.

Shoes should protect the feet and give them support "Human feet each consist of 26 bones, which are flexibly connected via joints and numerous tendons and muscles," explains Ilka Graupner from the BGW. “Shoes have a huge impact on these complex structures. And how we walk and stand has an impact on the entire body. ”It is therefore important to make sure you have good shoes. According to the BGW, shoes should "protect the feet, give them support and support the musculoskeletal system". In order to expose the feet to new stimuli and to give the shoes enough time to ventilate, the shoes should be changed regularly. "As we don't spend most of our everyday life barefoot, varied footwear plays a major role here," explains the medical educator. "If you are in the same pair from morning to evening, you should wear a different model the next day." This prevents misalignments and thus foot pain.

The expert also recommends shoe trees. On the one hand, these would preserve the shape of the shoe, but on the other hand they would help with ventilation. It takes a certain time until the moisture has completely escaped from the material.

What should be considered when buying shoes When buying shoes, the right size is crucial. The toes must have enough space to the front. The shoe width should also be observed by enclosing the foot with a well-fitting shoe, but never narrowing it. "There's nothing like trying it on," Graupner says. The best time for this is in the afternoon, as the feet are then a little thicker than in the morning. This would ensure not to accidentally buy a pair that was too small.

“A healthy foot doesn't need a pre-shaped footbed. A soft insole is much better, in which the foot can create its own bed, ”explains the expert on the interior of shoes. If there is slight cushioning in the heel area, the joints and muscles are relieved. Flat footwear with a fixed heel counter protects the heel and ankle and provides support. (ag)
